More examples of Mayor Hulsey acting inappropriately and without the support of City Council. Unilateral actions in defiance of a democratically elected body… isn’t that the hallmark of a King?

  1. 911 was called! The responsibility of setting Council meeting agendas had been transferred to new the City Administrator Joe Ashton, after Mayor Hulsey had been refusing to add Council Members’ items to the agendas (for which he was censured). The mayor was still trying to control the process on the afternoon of March 26, 2026. He reportedly tried to kick Ashton out of the room and lock himself with the secretary in her office. When Ashton declined to let Hulsey be involved, the mayor called the police.

  4. Hiring a legislative assistant (who contributed to his campaign) without the knowledge of Council
  5. Establishing a home rule committee, populated by his friends and supporters, without the knowledge of Council.
  6. Gary got censured again! At the July 6 2026 meeting, the mayor was censured again for his “repeated failure to follow direction provided by the City Council and any related actions deemed appropriate by the City Council.” The Resolution (item 7H on the agenda) details four instances of Mayor Hulsey ignoring the decisions of the democratically elected Council: (i) appointing himself as the City’s voting representative to the North Central Texas Council of Governments without authorization by resolution or other official action of the City Council, (ii) submitting correspondence on behalf of the City without prior authorization of the City Council, (iii) conducting Foreign Trade Zone communications without including the City Administrator despite having been directed to do so by the City Council, and (iv) failing to include or recognize the role of the City Administrator as directed by the City Council.
